The End of the Season.
Sicily, Italy With just two weeks left, we looked at our options. We wanted a bit of relaxation and a bit of...
It seemed like August of 2017 would never end. The heat, the crowds, there was no relief. Then came a stop in Capo Palinuro, on the Tyrrhenian coast of Italy where the Cilento National Park meets the sea.
The cruising guide said “only in settled weather.” The seas were calm, as was the wind, so we pulled Berkeley East into the anchorage looking forward to a quiet night, only to find boats, lots of them, zipping around in a frenzy. It was middle of the week in early September and we thought everyone would be back at work. It was also warm, very warm. August seemed to be melding into September.
From the seaside town of Palinuro, the principal tourist attraction is a boat ride around Capo Palinuro visiting caves, there are several. We took the “if you can’t ignore them, join them” approach, dropped the dinghy in the water, and followed all the little boats full of people, around the cape and along the cliffs.
By sunset, the air was cool and we were one of only two boats left in the anchorage. Patience was rewarded. Ah, September, we had almost forgotten what it felt like.
