Tortola, BVI
After the passage from Saba, we met back up with Mike and Linda (good friends and next-door neighbors from California) on Aquila and spent some very restful days in Little Bay, Peter Island, BVI. Little Bay was a nice change from the rough anchorage in Saba. It was very smooth and we had great snorkeling off the back of the boat.
We took Berkeley East into Nanny Cay, Tortola to start the repairs, which are expected to take more than two weeks. While the damage was all cosmetic, it was very extensive and the repair is complex and expensive. Luckily, we finally received a check from the other boat’s insurance company, and also found a team who has experience with this type of repair on other Hylas 54 boats.
As luck would have it we arrived in Tortola just before the full moon. So Mike, Linda and Anton (a fellow cruiser and friend of Mike and Linda’s) headed to Bomba’s for the first full moon party of the year. This is a once-a-month wild event in a surf shack on the beach in Cappoons Bay. Live music, lots of people, dancing and Bomba’s special shroom (mushroom) tea make for a great night.
While most bars in the BVI’s have license plates or yacht club flags (donated by their patrons) hanging on the walls, Bomba’s has women’s knickers. This especially large pair are not Mary’s!
Our transportation to the event was in a car that Anton had borrowed from a friend. It was very tired, out of gas and we questioned if it would make it up each hill, but in the end we all made it safely home. We are off to Charlotte for a few days to check on the house, prepare for taxes and catch up with our neighbors while the boat is torn apart.
