A tale of two cities
Palermo, Sicily Every country has a dark horse, a place that is seen as the evil stepchild, more trouble, less...
In Italy it was churches, we looked at every church we saw, sometimes dragging ourselves inside thinking we’d probably see nothing new, yet we always did. In Greece, it is the same with forts and castles; there is one in every town, on every peninsula, in every cove. And since they are always located on the highest ground with the best vantage points, we have to go. And every time we do, we see the quintessential photographs of tour books and travel brochures; the breathtaking views that make people dream of going to Greece.
The island of Limnos was no exception. We found a small, quiet, charming island with the remains of a Byzantine fort and castle towering over the main town of Myrina. Luckily, despite thinking we should wait for a brighter day, we forced ourselves to make the climb on our arrival. And like all the other climbs to all the other forts on all the other islands in Greece, we were rewarded visually with a panorama that we could never get from sea level.
It was a good call to make the climb early in our visit, as the next three days would be spent sitting out a Meltimi wind on Berkeley East in the harbor; where the view was different but equally as spectacular.
