No. The name Berkeley East came from a ferry boat, “the Berkeley”, where we first met. The Berkeley is an 1898 steam ferryboat that operated for 60 years on San Francisco Bay, and is now part of the Maritime Museum in San Diego California. Aside from being the remarkable place that brought us together, “Berkeley” is best known for her role during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake when she carried thousands of survivors to safety. The East part of Berkeley East’s name is a result of our trip to Taiwan, where the boat was being built. There was 30-foot Chinese symbol on the wall behind the boat during construction. Thinking the symbol would translate into something profound, we agreed to use it with our already chosen name “Berkeley” regardless of what it meant. We imagined names like Berkeley Fortune, or Berkeley Dream, but it turned out to mean East, as the symbol was simply the labeling of the East side of the boat yard. Living up to our pledge, we christened the boat “Berkeley East”. As a good friend once said, we were lucky, as the symbol could have meant “Men’s Room”.
Berkeley East is a Hylas 54 Raised Salon. We had her built at Queen Long Marine in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and commissioned in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. She is a high-performance, offshore sailing yacht capable of long-range cruising in comfort.
