Islands in the Clouds
Antigua, St Kitts & Nevis – Jumby Bay Antigua After a restful few days in Barbuda, we headed back to...
We have always wanted to go to Morocco. When we were at the top of The Rock of Gibraltar, we could see it, so we decided to take the ferry across and spend a day in Tangiers.
We left Gibralter early, walked across the airport runway into Spain, and caught a cab to Tarifa where the ferry leaves for Tangiers. By the time the day was over, we had been on two continents, in three countries, crossed two bodies of water and utilized five modes of transportation (including a camel).
Since we only had the one day, to make the most of our time, we scheduled a private tour with an English speaking guide and driver.
Tangiers was another surprise. We’ve heard many stories about the sad condition of the city, the poverty and theft, but found a very interesting, and in some places, very beautiful city.
Tangiers is the main port linking Europe and Africa. For many years, it was an International City and much of that influence remains today. It has a bustling, cosmopolitan atmosphere with a striking contrast of ancient and modern architecture. The people have African roots but there is a European air.
We drove through the city and into the suburbs, hearing about Morocco’s history and evolution to its present state. Our guide explained that the King of Morocco likes Tangiers and has chosen it for his summer home.
The highlight of the day was time spent in the Medina, the old town, a tangle of narrow winding streets and countless alleyways. Here, we sampled Moroccan cuisine, listened to Moroccan music, learned about carpets made here, shopped for spices, crafts and pottery. We walked in circles for hours, taking in the sights and sounds of everyday Moroccan life.
The day was too short. We will go back to Morocco again.
